Why Jumping from Diet to Diet Never Works?

Many of my coaching clients report at the time they start working with me that they have tried all the diets and none of them worked for them. Sounds familiar? Keep reading...
When we go into details on their consultation, it turns out that they often start a diet, do their best, get tired or bored quite soon then the cravings win, and they binge. They then assume that diet is not good for them, so jump on another one and go through the same process. Sometimes they would have tried multiple methods within a few months.

If that’s you, just know that I don’t blame you. The amount of contradicting information that pours onto people from various media sources is overwhelming and frankly, damaging.

If you are a pet person, think about your favourite animal. Would you do that to them? If not so much a pet person, how about your car? Would you switch up the type and quality of petrol, motor oil, brake fluid oil, antifreeze every two weeks?

Your body needs fuel, and it needs the right fuel to survive and perform all the activities it’s designed for. Walking, thinking, or exercise is easy to grasp, but how about all the processes you can’t see? All your organs need energy to be able to perform their role properly too.

When you hop from one diet to another your metabolism will be in constant panic mode which will increase your chemical stress levels, and cortisol will rise. There is a whole range of side effects that can occur when you are depriving your body and if you top that with switching up the different fads, the results can be more damaging than the benefits.

Weight Gain

While you will lose weight during dieting periods, the binges will outweigh the calorie deficit easily and when you stop dieting completely the weight will creep back up without a solid maintenance plan.

Nutrient Deficiency

Most fad diets are highly restrictive, and you can easily end up missing out on essential macro- and micronutrients developing a deficiency.

Disrupted Sleep

Elevated cortisol levels can cause sleep problems. If you often wake up in the middle of the night with no apparent reason, you should consider monitoring how stressed you feel.

Cravings

Disrupted sleep and extreme food restrictions often manifest in cravings that are hard to manage. This is when people flip into binging for a few days or even weeks, then start another diet.

Mood Swings

Hormones control your mood and if they are out of whack, you will end up feeling like being on a roller-coaster and often at the bottom of it, frustrated, irritable and miserable.

Loss of Self-Confidence

After a few rounds of failed attempts even the most confident person would lose some of it and feel low and unhappy.

Skin, Hair, and Health Problems

Malnutrition and deficiencies eventually manifest in unpleasant symptoms and beyond a point your doctor may need to get you on supplements to get your body back on track.

In a nutshell, trying out and jumping between diets regularly can leave you unhappier and weighing more than when you started. If you really would like to try a diet, give it at least 4 weeks and stay consistent. Better yet, instead of trying to fix your problem overnight, look for ways to create a long-term lifestyle plan, that you can sustain. Any questions feel free to get in touch.
