120km For The Scottish Association for Mental Health.
Last month I decided to sign a team up for a pretty big challenge which is to cycle 120km in a closed road event in September. This very exciting event is called Tour O The Borders and will take place in the Scottish town of Peebles.
Every year I like to do something pretty cool for charity, last year myself and a few clients slept out in Princess Street Gardens with 9,000 participant to raise money for Social Bite. It turned out to be one of the coldest nights of the winter with temperatures getting to a rather chilly -11 degrees.
This challenge will be a little different, but equally as rewarding, as we look to raise as much money as possible for SamH and the Brewgooder Foundation.
I am going to do a three part series of articles for this challenge. This first part is going to be about why we are doing it for SamH.
Working as a personal trainer in Edinburgh has enabled me to work with a lot of clients from a variety of backgrounds and professions. You would like to think that everyone feels great, loves what they do and have a great social life. Although this may be the case for some, a lot have something in common and that is a lot actually suffer from a variety of mental health issues. In business, listen to any "marketing guru" and they will always tell a new business owner to find their niche and focus in on that area and become the expert. In classic Calumn Duthie Coaching way I chose not to do it the way these coaches proclaimed was the right way to go as I wanted to try and help as many people as possible become better than they were yesterday.
As cliche as that sounds I believe exercise should be available to all no matter your background or current mental health status. So my niche kind of found me. Exercise is well known and well researched to be one of the best forms of treatment for a variety of mental health conditions. It raises the levels of 'happy hormones', gives you goals and a sense of achievement and helps to give you more energy. That said it is hardly surprising that for a while I had a number of clients, probably half, who were experiencing difficulties with their own mental health. Now, I joke with my clients that I am the cheapest mental health therapist in town. It is obviously important that I build up a relationship with my client before I can say statements like this. It often takes weeks if not months for them to tell me about how they feel, be it stress, depression, Anxiety or even PTSD. However, the more we talk about these things the easier it gets and you will also realise how common it is. Mental health issues come in all shapes, forms and severity and although much more out in the open now there still seems to be a heavy stigma attached to them. You wouldn't think twice about calling your boss to say you wont be in work today because you have the flu, why the hell should it be any different to suffering from anxiety or feeling depressed.
This is why I have decided to take matters into my own hands and help raises awareness for mental health in Edinburgh and Scotland by trying and raises as much money as possible for SAMH (The Scottish Association for Mental health). What SAMH do is absolutely incredible - focusing their efforts on helping those who suffer from mental health issues. However, more needs to be done to break the stigma that’s attached to this issue and together if we can do what we can we are helping.
Now I know I am not able to do this myself and I have and still am reaching out to clients past and present, friends and friends of friends who would like to challenge themselves by training for an awesome event in September called Tour O The Borders. This idea is something I have had in my head for well over a year now and not only feel it's a great event to get people to do something they may not of ever thought about tackling themselves what better way to do it than as part of a team. A team of people who will encourage and motivate right to the end, but most importantly be there when moral is wavering. This is the type of community that should be around to promote good mental health and the more people who know about it the better.
If you are looking for a fitness challenge with a difference please get in touch, the more people in the team means the more money we can potentially raise for these great causes. You don't have to be a client to take part. You can sign up to the Calumn Duthie Coaching team right here.
