You probably have heard the term accountability quoted several times in articles about weight loss or fat loss. That's no coincidence, more often than not people, including my clients, experience a slump on their fitness journey. Lucky for them our vibrant community and myself are there for them to pick them up and help them push on with their plan even when they don't feel like doing it. Weight loss and weight management is one of the most researched topics in health and fitness nowadays and while the outcomes of research on various methods are not conclusive enough to determine "the best solution", almost all agree that accountability and having a robust support system as well as internal motivation to lose weight are critical factors in succeeding. Here are seven ways you can make sure someone is there for you to support and hold you accountable on the days you lose your mojo. 1. Find Yourself a Training BuddyHave you heard the saying "sharing is caring" before? Even though it usually refers to sharing physical things like food or your possessions, in a fitness sense, we could talk about sharing responsibility and accountability but also sharing success when you hit your goals. Find a friend, a family member or a familiar face in the gym with similar goals to yours and agree to train together regularly. The fact that you won't want to let someone else down will more likely motivate you to show up. 2. Keep a ScheduleJust like you do for work and business, keep a schedule for your workouts and your food planning too. Even better if you can manage to fit everything into the same master calendar, so you can see how your work, family and fitness tasks fit into your days. Then all you need to do is to tick them the way you do for work. Ensure you schedule some downtime for yourself where you relax and recharge. Otherwise, you may risk burnout. Make the important ones non-negotiable, unless you can't get out of bed for some reason. 3. Join a Support Club or Fitness CommunityWhether you join a local walking/running/cycling club or an online community like the plenty of Facebook groups with specific common goals, the principle is the same: have people with similar mindset and similar goals check in on you regularly as well as you checking-in with them to keep each other accountable for their decisions and actions. At CD Fitness Coaching, we also have our community on Facebook where people with varied background come together to virtually cheer each other, listen to struggles, share their challenges and how they tackle them as well as providing support — interested in joining? One thing to understand is that nobody is comfortable with changes, some more than others. If you were living a certain way for years, let alone decades, when you finally decide to change it significantly, the people closest to you often won't understand, will challenge your decisions and in the worst case won't want you to change. Most times, that's because they will start to feel like they have to change as well to be worthy of your love. Without going too deep, understanding that they are only human and probably afraid of what happens after you achieved your goal is vital. They want the best for you but all of a sudden they don't know how to express that. You need to tell them how important it is for you to work towards that goal and why it's essential. You may experience some teething issues, but eventually, they will come around so long you show them that you're serious and you'll follow through no matter what. 5. Take on Online Personal TrainingIf this is the first time you hear about it, training online means just that. It brings you the best of both worlds: personal training and flexibility with your schedule. You'll have a dedicated trainer design your workouts to your individual needs that serve your goals as well as a handful of people training in your community, aiming for similar heights to have your back throughout. I have published an article previously about the benefits of online training in more detail, feel free to have a read and if you think it's for you, don't hesitate to reach out for a chat.
