5 Things I've Learned From Working In The Healing Field

From the age of 9, I knew that by laying my hands on someone it would help to them feel better.
Foot rubs when my mum was pregnant with my younger siblings gained me pocket money and an empowering, interconnected sense that when I could make her feel good, I felt good. I've come a long way from being my mum's spare change and simple thumb pressured strokes as I now freelance in massage therapy, setting up spaces, blending oils, taking the tension, aches, stress out of clients and leaving them replenished with their intentions. But the pearls I've realised about putting ourselves back together go far beyond the physical realm. After spending some time this month at mental health conferences and workshops with a peer worker, I've decided to bring to the table some findings that I've noticed make conversations blossom in the everlasting strive for wellbeing. Remember, life is a buffet table, take what you may wish.

Heart Waves Are Stronger Than Brainwaves

Therefore, as when we were babies we would benefit a lot more easily by tuning into felt perception rather than thought. Our thoughts run away with false stories and detrimental beliefs. Whereas feelings and emotions are far more accurate and trustworthy. Feeling something in your heart is more than just a turn of phrase, because the neural network that emits these waves into your energy field is able to pick up on the feeling of another beings' feeling when in contact with that energy field. The same can be said for the third neural system, the gut instinct. Something may appear logical but when your body is saying no, pay attention. We have been so trained out of this as children by adopting what our caregivers thought was good for us, and by the time we leave school we are in desperate need of this perceptual retraining to make decent decisions in our lives. If moment by moment we can come into meditative states whereby we are bodily aware we can pick up on a lot more information that can serve us.

Oneness, Unity And Inter-Being Are Experiential

There is an I, me and mine, this ego, our separate self is made up of the same energy as everything else taking a different form. It is there for the universe to expand and know itself, yep the yogis and zen masters had it right, self realisation is the aim of this dualistic game. And how do we know ourselves? Through one another, we can relate to everything else in the universe because of this inter-connection and our ability to communicate. Just like how I was able to connect with my mother and give her what she needed, we both benefited and felt purposeful. Everytime I see a client, it is not just a healing for them, because sharing in the same time- space reality we are a vibrational match and that means the forces that attract within us do so for a reason, conscious or subconscious. I always receive information about myself when giving a treatment and by attuning myself to the frequency of another I can understand what any underlying issues there may be in them but also in me. Knowing that homeostasis is the natural inclination for all beings, I know that by keeping my own vibration high, if they allow themselves to tune to that clear wave during our session they will be uplifted without much effort on either of our parts.

Polarity Gives Guidance To Healing

By looking for the opposite of what is causing us trouble in our lives we can realise what we would actually prefer and hence take action in manifesting. When we break a bone it's easy to see the opposite experience we would like being a fused bone, it is the same look in the opposing direction with any emotional or mental trauma. If we would like to heal loneliness, we look for company, fatigue - good rest, confusion - clarity, ignorance - knowledge, pain - ease, it just entails a process of finding out what that opposite may be and inviting it in, imagining and believing it to be possible.

My favourite presentation at the conference was from a group called Solas, the Irish word for light. They are situated in the northern Wild Atlantic Way and conduct their counselling service whilst hiking. The power of a group therapy session amongst nature has a power in itself, people are not alone, they are not confronted by a white coat and in physical stimulation and friendship, subliminal observance takes hold. We are able to create these settings and by realising ourselves as a part in the puzzle of the everything we are find conscious transformation. Our focus is the greatest tool we have to managing our mental health, and having someone there to reflect what we may not even be aware that we are paying attention to can really wake us up. But even alone, after tidying our living space, ordering our things and purifying our environment, we can centre ourselves in our need for belonging, pathways of connection in the world and completion. I like to burn essential oils that have the qualities that I feel I may be lacking, especially if getting outdoors isn't the best option for me at any given time.

Life Is Light, whether It's Shone When We Follow Our Joy Or Used To Alight Our Shadows

We are in an infinite play with polarity, every time we come across a hindrance in creating the life that we want, whether it's a trigger, a fear, a lack, an oppositional force etc, we are invited to turn around and become aware, using this pull as an agent of change. We light up when we get what we want and standing on that horizon healed in one way, we breed desire for new expansion. The field of healing is never-ending, it is evolution and it regenerates with our positive impact. The only thing we need to do when we commit to our own and the healing of others is to recognise our resistances, where is the snag that keeps us safe? What are we ignoring and why? As mentioned in my article on forgiveness, there are many different aspects or sides to us that may not be on board fully with our decisions, they are blocks. It is up to us to give airtime to these 'selves' and understand our shadowed by habit motivations in order to move as one in our set direction.
So there's a few cents, much more for another day. But to tie this all together, one of the greatest teachings there is in my opinion is just to be authentic, accepting of that true self and open to having others receive that. This may be difficult some days, the world is a harsh place but if we can renown the truth of being and share it, we are game changers in the field of healing.
